Underwater Acoustics Research Group

Since the RTC research pier (see photo below) was built in 2005, this group has been studying sound in San Francisco Bay. A hydrophone deployed from the end of the pier has been recording continuously since January 1, 2009, and the data is processed and posted in near real time.

A study of sounds from the plainfin midshipman (aka the Toadfish) show it to be calling mainly at night, possibly to avoid noise from shipping traffic.

Previous work by this group with blue-whale calls in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, published recently, shows an interesting synchronism in frequency of their calling.
